A pile of boards behind my house reminded me of some sand dunes that i had photographed only three days earlier in an African desert. The similarities between the boards and the dunes helped me to remove the labels from both, and to realize that their expressive power was in their tones, shapes, lines, textures, and hues--the real subject matter . . . ."
